Post 1: Introduction — Your Starting Point Doesn’t Define Your Finish Line

I grew up in a poor, single-parent household with my four siblings. My mother worked two jobs, sometimes three and I started working at eleven to help take care of the family. Those early lessons taught me discipline, resilience, and the belief that your starting point doesn’t define your finish line.

Although these steps are easy to read, the work involved requires determination, focus and time. So, the sooner you get started, the more likely you are to reach your goal. So, why not start today?

Action Steps: - Reflect on your financial habits and mindset. Why do you think about money the way you do? Why are you living from check to check? Why is there more month at the end of the money? Why do you get behind on your bills when you have a small or large emergency? How can I start to change my financial situation? - Write down one financial goal for the next 30 days.

Next Step: In the next post, learn how to move from survival to stability.

Post 2: From Survival to Stability

Step 1: Secure the Basics - Apply for benefits like unemployment, SNAP, or Medicaid. Do this only if you need to, if you don't need it, great, you are a little bit ahead! Prioritize housing, food, utilities, and transportation. You noticed that wants are not on this list! Having cigarettes, a high-end cell phone, a new hairdo, or hanging out with your friends is not on this list. If you want to change your situation, you have to put in the work!

Step 2: Build a Micro-Emergency Fund - Even $5–10 a week matters. Automate deposits. This was hard for me to do when I had more bills at the end of my check, but I knew this was the only way I was going to change my situation. Once I started savings, it became easier because I did not miss the money.

Step 3: Upskill While You Wait - Free resources: Coursera, Google Career Certificates - Dedicate 5–10 hours a week to learning. Change your mindset and you will change your life! If it worked for a guy with my circumstances. It will work for you as well.

Step 4: Start Small with Investing - Open Roth IRA or brokerage accounts. - Automate $25/month contributions.

Action Steps: - Secure immediate income and basic needs. - Save weekly and start small investments. - Allocate time for learning new skills.

You have to ask yourself, are you really ready to change the trajectory of your life or are you just looking for another get rich scheme? These steps are simple, but if you want to chance your life and that of your family, you need discipline and time to make this plan work. Or you can just keep doing what you're doing and expect something to change. Where I come from, we call that crazy! Nothing is going to change unless you change it! No one is going to do it for you. And if I can do it, I know you can!

Next Step: The next post explores how service and benefits can accelerate wealth.

Post 3: Investing 101 — From Initial investment to Financial Independence Step 3

This step is where you may want to consider getting some professional money management help. In step one, you reflected on your financial habits and mindset. In step 2, you took care of your basic needs and started an emergency fund. Now is the time to start getting serious about your investment future. A financial planner or advisor might be of assistance to you. Mine was for me.

1: Start Early - Time in the market beats timing the market. This is something that sounds easy, but a lot of people thing they don't need to be in the market for a while. They think they can time when the market is going to be down or they know someone who claims they have hit the jackpot by timing the market. This may or may not be true, but for most of us, it's better to be in the market for many years to reach our goal. See the secret sauce for making money in the market is to be in it long enough for compounding to works for you. One of the world's most successful investors (Warren Buffet) said compounding is the 8th wonder of the world. Step 2: Use the Right Vehicles - 401(k): Contribute at least enough to get the employer's match. - IRA/Roth IRA: Tax-advantaged growth. - ESOPs: Company stock ownership plans can be powerful wealth builders. These vehicles will help your investments grow and the most important part of this is part of this is free money! Step 3: Avoid Common Pitfalls - High-fee funds eat into returns. - Chasing “hot stocks” usually ends badly. Step 4: Learn the Rule of 72 - Divide 72 by your annual return to estimate doubling time. Your Action Plan: - Open 401(k)/IRA and contribute consistently. - Avoid high-fee or speculative investments. - Track your portfolio growth using the Rule of 72. Avoid investing in things you don't know because someone has a hot tip! Investing things, you know or things your investment advisor recommend based on your risk tolerance and your goals. Investing in risky investments and things that seem to offer incredible returns will probably lead to a lot of heartache and a costly lesson on what not to do. Becoming wealth is a slow methodical process. It is a marathon not a sprint.

Post 4: Investing 101

Step 1: Start Early — Time in the market beats timing the market. Unfortunately, most of us do not start early enough because no one told or showed us how to get started. But, mor importantly, they did not tell us why it was important to get started early! Very few of us are entrepreneurs or C suite executives, nor will we be. So, we have to do it the old fashion way. Invest!!

If you did not start early, all is not lost! You can still amass a substantial amount of wealth no matter when you get started. The trick is to get started and be consistent with your investing. Do not try and time the market. The road to wealth is littered with failed attempts to time the market.

Step 2: Use the Right Vehicles - 401(k), IRA/Roth IRA, ESOPs. These are just some of the tools available to help you along your journey. I highly recommend finding a financial advisor that you trust to help you with deciding which vehicle are best for you based on your risk tolerance and your financial goals. If you can't find one or don't want the help, you can still invest on your own. I have tried that as well. I found it to be an expensive and painfully way to learn the ropes on investing.

Step 3: Avoid Pitfalls - Avoid high-fee funds and speculative stocks. This is where I highly recommend a fiduciary advisor. This is someone who is bond by law to put your interests ahead of their own as it pertains to your money. Something nice to know.

Step 4: Rule of 72 — Estimate how quickly investments double. This is just a formula that estimates how long it will take your money to double. To use it, simply divide 72 by the annual rate of return to find the appropriate number of years it will take for the investment to double. Kind of something fun to know. But it can also help you see how long it will take you to have a certain amount of money at that annual rate of return.

Action Steps: - Open accounts and contribute consistently. - Avoid high fees. - Track growth with Rule of 72.

Next Step: Diversify beyond stocks.
